Higher Than Expected

Turn around and you'll see him at the top of the hill
Glaring down at the town and the river so still
And in his parent's eyes he'll stay and shortly settle
But in his heart there burns a need to prove his mettle.

Growing up round the corner from the factory floor
When the dog hears the whistle it bounds to the door
Father's finished working, a slump in his chair
Feet on a sofa that could do with some repair

Oh he longs to fly
Higher than expected
Oh he burns to climb
Higher than expected

Oh he longs to climb
Higher than expected
Oh he burns to fly
Higher than expected

If home is a heartache then school's a relief
Adding up with the numbers: a fragile belief
There's a chance beyond just wishing it real
In a place he's yet to find dreams can be revealed

Oh he longs to fly
Higher than expected
Oh he burns to climb
Higher than expected

So now and forever he leaves it behind
Town after city all blur in his mind
Work in the morning and restless at night
His face a ghost in the bare naked light

Amidst all the effort he's always lost
He's found a river he cannot cross
And when he wakes from dreams facing home
His heart is an anchor, as heavy as stone
Stone, stone

Oh he longs to fly
Higher than expected
Oh he burns to climb
Higher than expected

Oh he burnt to fly
Higher than expected
Oh he longed to fly
Higher than expected

Turn around and you'll see him at the top of the hill
Glaring down at the town and the river so still
